Opening Reception: Sue Heatley, "The Noise of the Day"

Quirk Gallery welcomes back New York-based artist, Sue Heatley for a solo exhibition of new work. The Noise of the Day is a collection of new paintings recognizable to fans of Heatley's work by her layered textures, graphic shapes, and bold use of color. The pieces for this show have largely been influenced by the shifts Heatley experienced while completing her work.

"Like most people around me, 2017 has been a year of feeling unmoored and insecure," Heatley explains. "I have never considered my work to be socio-political, but the atmosphere in our country, the relentless noise of the news and increasing feeling of despair compelled me to work more directly, favoring fast-drying acrylic paints on linen over multi-step printmaking. Beginning with the series of monotypes and intensifying in the paintings, solid graphic shapes suggesting figures and cartoon text bubbles share the stage with encroaching, somewhat sinister black dots. In all, there is an attempt at resolve, visually and spiritually. Beauty wins out in my work, because I say so. Art has always been my way of navigating the world around me and this is my visual response to 'the noise of the day.'

I am an artist because I love materials and the making, doing, physical feeling that comes with studio practices. As a printmaker, the elusive mark that only a print process provides has kept me engaged for years. Monotype and linoleum printing have always been the jumping off point for collaged paintings on paper, building layers of formal abstractions that meld the figurative and the physical; animated conflict, energy and balance."

Sue Heatley is a local Richmond artist who has been living in East Hampton, New York for the past twelve years. She has previously exhibited work at Quirk Gallery including ceramic pieces, prints, and textiles. This newest series of paintings is done on linen, "the sublime surface of which was as seductive as paper had been for years," says Heatley. "This is a new love affair with a new material and a renewed invitation to the viewer to gaze, jump in and swim around."

The Noise of the Day opens in the Main Gallery at Quirk on Wednesday, October 18. A reception with the artist will be held that evening from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. This exhibition continues through November 26.
