Welcome Reception for Haiyin Liang

Quirk Hotel + Gallery and Visual Arts Center of Richmond are thrilled to introduce our newest artist-in-residence, Haiyin Liang. Please help us welcome Haiyin at a special reception on Thursday, July 5 from 5-8 pm in Quirk's Main Gallery.

After completing her MFA program in Craft/Material Studies at VCU, Haiyin began her Quirk + VisArts residency immediately after graduation this past May. While the primary focus will be on creating work for a solo exhibition at Quirk later this year, Haiyin also plans to teach at VisArts where she will have access to their amazing facilities and classes. With opportunities to explore different media, materials, and disciplines, Haiyin hopes to make new discoveries in her work.

Haiyin is largely influenced by her Chinese heritage and "combine[s] the aesthetics of Chinese paintings with materials uncommonly used in jewelry to create work that evokes shi-yi, a Chinese word that describes the feeling of inner peace and tranquility achieved through the reading of poetry and painting." Additional inspiration is drawn from landscape paintings from the Song dynasty as well as research focused on ancient Chinese gardens, courtyard layouts, and garden structures.

With a practice that combines natural materials and traditional metalsmithing techniques, Haiyin explores the manipulation of nature, an important practice in the history of Chinese courtyards and gardens. The use of ancient metalworking methods such as filigree and cloisonné are also incorporated into Haiyin's work. "The dedication required by [these processes] leads to quiet contemplation. This connects the work to my memories and desires while leaving space for the imagination."

Haiyin's residency will conclude with a solo show of new work to be exhibited in The Mezzanine at Quirk Hotel October 11 through November 11. A collection of her jewelry will be available in Quirk's gallery shop. For more information about upcoming classes, workshops and events, please visit the VisArts website,, or Quirk Gallery's website,
